Bio
Founded on October 1, 2008, as part of the AAC’s Foundational Music Programme, the Wind Orchestra emerged to support the development of young musicians from regional philharmonic bands. Initially comprising around 20 students, it quickly grew into a platform for artistic and cultural advancement, attracting performers from other regions and institutions. Today, the ensemble includes around 90 young musicians from northern Portugal, representing various stages of musical development. It performs regularly across Portugal and abroad, participating in renowned festivals, competitions, and collaborative projects. Internationally recognised for its artistic quality, the orchestra has become one of the most vibrant and respected wind ensembles of its kind. It actively contributes to the evolution of the wind band repertoire through commissions and premiere performances. The ensemble has received 12 international distinctions, including First Prize at the 46th Certamen Internacional de Música Vila d’Altea (Spain) and the 19th World Music Contest – Concert Division (Netherlands). It has collaborated with acclaimed soloists such as Florent Héau, Nuno Pinto, Jorge Almeida, and Loïc Schneider. Since its foundation, the orchestra has been under the direction of Maestro Luciano Pereira.
