WMC draws millions of spectators from home and abroad
During the second weekend of the World Music Contest (WMC), one highlight followed another. Contests for world titles took place at three venues: the Marching and Show contests in the stadium, the percussion events in the Kerkrade Theater, and the fanfare band contests in Roda Hall. This resulted not only in exceptional musical performances but also in unforgettable emotional moments that resonated around the world.
Bengal flares
The WMC’s second weekend kicked off last Friday with the preliminary rounds of the Marching and Show contests. Simultaneously, the high-level contest for Percussion Ensembles got underway. On Saturday, the world title for the Marching parade—held in the atmospheric Parkstad Limburg Stadium—went to Advendo from Sneek. Amidst an atmosphere reminiscent of a football final, complete with Bengal flares, the group from Sneek convincingly secured the world title with a score of 93.33 points.
Limburg showdown
On Saturday, a packed Kerkrade Theater hosted a head-to-head battle between the Koninklijke Oude Harmonie van Eijsden and Concordia Obbicht. The tension in the hall was palpable as Artistic Director Björn Bus announced the scores for the top two contenders. The runner-up scored 95.43 points, while the winner, Concordia, surpassed that with a score of 97.23. What followed was an incredibly emotional outburst from the conductor and vice-chairman, both moved to tears.
Packed stadium
On Sunday, the 13,000 spectators at the Parkstad Limburg Stadium were treated to an impressive eight-hour program of marching and show competitions. Both world titles (marching and show) went to K&G from Leiden, sparking great joy among the musicians on the field and the hundreds of K&G fans in the stands.
Reaching millions
After two weeks, this edition of the WMC has certainly not lacked national and international media attention. De Telegraaf, de Volkskrant, NRC, Jeugdjournaal, Aachener Zeitung, De Limburger, L1, WDR, De Stentor, Saarländischer Rundfunk—the list goes on. A vast array of international, national, and regional media outlets have provided extensive coverage.
National attention, in particular, has been overwhelming, explains WMC Director Bart Van der Roost. "The one-hour NOS broadcast on NPO1 last Saturday evening was a real game-changer—not just for us at the WMC, but for the entire wind music sector in the Netherlands. No fewer than 1.2 million viewers tuned in to see the stunning footage of the opening ceremony, the work of the volunteers behind the scenes, and all the spectacular performances on the stadium field and throughout Kerkrade. The passion for the craft that went into this production deeply moved us as an organization. It provides a massive boost for the remainder of this WMC and for future editions. And that’s not to mention the 14 million views on our social media channels over the past two weeks alone. With this new team, we’ve embarked on a new path that is really starting to resonate. That makes me—and many others—very enthusiastic."
