Sjtub: a public art project
"Sjtub" is a word from the dialect of the Eastern Mining Region which refers to dust (coal dust) and dust long. Dust Long is the dreaded disease, which caused so many miners dead. "Sjtub" is now a public art project by the Swiss artist Christine Munz (cmunz). She works with French philosopher Frans Geraedts, composer Hardy Mertens and Artistic Director WMC Harry Reumkens.
Sjtub examines the role of the memory of the Mining history, the identity of the Eastern Mining and the people who came from here. Sjtub continues the movement of that role and that identity again.
The project runs from 2009 to 2013 along the cycle of WMC Kerkrade and knows two tracks.
One track is that of the objects and their stories. There are almost no visible reminders of the mines in what is now called Parkstad Limburg, but people collected a lot of material that kept the memory of the mining time alive. All people, young and old, are asked to hand in an object of this memory, along with the story that is linked to this object. Christine Munz will use these objects and stories in several presentations in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
The second track is that of the music and the breath. Hardy Mertens wrote the composition "Sjtub" which will also be presented in several stages of the process. For this track, a special youth wind band from the Eastern Mining will be conducted. Also, the famous brothers Steinman, all miners sons from Treebeek, will cooperate on the project.
Everything around Sjtub will be documented and retained in “the Sjtub box”, including all visual and musical manifestations of Sjtub, that will be exhibited nationally and internationally after 2013. Sjtub can contribute to Heerlen 2015 and Maastricht 2018.
Sjtub is a 3.0 project, that makes shore that the website and social media groups also remain active and available after 2018.
